Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park
(September 2024)

The following pictures were all taken from the balcony of my room.  One of the nice things about The View Hotel is that all of their rooms face east (into the park) so that no matter what room you have you have a good view.

All of these pictures show West Mitten (generally to the left side of the picture), Merrick Butte (generally to the right of the picture) and East Mitten (generally in the center of the picture).

A butte is generally defined as a steep-sided, isolated hill with a small, flat top. Buttes are smaller than mesas, plateaus, and tablelands, and are created by erosion from water, wind, and ice. The word "butte" comes from a French word meaning "small hill".

These are facing east - into the sunrise.
Therefore most of these are of the sunrise.

The following two pictures we also taken from the balcony of my room.  The interesting thing about these pictures is that they contain a rainbow.  However, there had been no rain and as you can see there were very few clouds.

Rainbows can appear without the presence of rain. Rainbows are formed when sunlight is refracted and dispersed through water droplets in the atmosphere. While rain is a common source of these water droplets, rainbows can also form under other conditions where water is present in the air.  My guess is that this rainbow was formed by Virga.  Virgo is when rain evaporates before reaching the ground.

The following pictures were taken from John Ford's Point.  John Ford's Point is a vantage point in Monument Valley.  The point was named after director John Ford. He shot nine movies in Monument Valley, which is why it is often called John Ford's Country. This ledge was often used as a camera location in his films. Today it is a popular excursion destination, from here you have a great view into the red desert of Monument Valley.
