Nevada Northern

Railroad

Nye, Nevada

The Nevada Northern Railroad was built primarily to reacha major copper producing area in White Pine County. The railway, constructed in 1905-06, extended northward about 140 miles from Ely to connections with the Western Pacific Railroad at Shafter and the Southern Pacific Railroad at Cobre. The real business of this railroad was copper. It was the reason that the railroad was built in the first place. Ore trains ran day and night, year-round. The demand for copper was insatiable. In 1967 the NNRR reported 40 million net ton-miles of freight revenue on 162 miles of line. The Nevada Northern Railway is not a mishmash of equipment from different railroads or different countries. This is the original railroad equipment in the original paint schemes in the original setting, on the original Nevada Northern Railway mainline.  All this equipment has been on the property for decades, and some if it more than a century, all of it still operating on the original track that was graded and laid a century ago.  This picture was taken while the train crew was preparing the train for departure.
